The Israeli army confirmed the raid and said they had detained Abdallah Azzam al-Shalalda, 27, who was suspected of stabbing an Israeli settler near the Hebron two weeks ago but escaped after suffering gunshot injuries.

The soldiers entered the room, arresting the suspect and shooting and killing his cousin, Abdallah Azzam Shaldallah, 28, when he attacked them, the Shin Bet later said.

“More such actions ‘are necessary to hold Israel accountable for the crimes it continues to commit against the land and people of Palestine”, he said. However, Palestinian sources said the man was shot when he entered the hospital room from the attached bathroom.

The development of settlements has been one of the obstacles to negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. (My cousin) needed to wash for prayer and was inside the restroom.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said Shalalda and his family, including a cousin killed in the raid, were known operatives of the Islamist group Hamas.

In October, AFP journalists recorded one such operation at a checkpoint outside Ramallah, in which agents who had been throwing stones with a group of Palestinians suddenly drew their guns and opened fire as stones flew at them.

THE prize-winning Psagot Winery in a West Bank settlement north of Jerusalem has become a favourite destination in recent years for right-wing Israeli and American politicians, eager not just to quaff Cabernet but also to score political points by highlighting the return of the Jews to their biblical homeland. There are about 1,000 Israeli companies operating in more than a dozen industrial zones in West Bank settlements, and roughly 23,000 acres of Jewish-run farms.

Shalalda allegedly carried out a stabbing in Gush Etzion in the West Bank last month, the army said. Police have entered a hospital in Jerusalem to extract files about patients involved in rock-throwing.

This means more people will lose their land.

“We are committed to the Israelis continuing to have a qualitative military edge in the region”, Earnest said.

The author of an upcoming book on the undercover agents said they undergo months of training, often come from Arabic-speaking minorities in Israel and immerse themselves in the “local terrain”, intimately learning the habits and movements of their targets.

Hannah Weisfeld, director of Yachad, said: “Members of the Jewish community should feel confident to stand up and say loudly that the bulk of the community believes that only by creating a Palestinian state, and not by maintaining the status quo, will Israel’s citizens get the security they need and deserve”.

“The man is in a hospital, he’s not planning to attack soldiers”, said Mr Al Sharif.

It claimed the man had tried to attack the troops, but gave no further details and would not say whether undercover troops had participated.

Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security agency issued a statement after the hospital raid saying it “will not permit terror operatives to hide in any places of refuge”.

A day before the White House meeting, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro told JNS.org in an interview on the JFNA General Assembly’s “Press Stage” that the meeting marked the latest chapter “in a relationship that obviously goes through certain phases and certain cycles, the fundamentals of which, the bedrock and the basis of which, really has never changed, and that’s a positive thing”.
