“Over the years, a large gap has opened between the western and eastern parts of the city in terms of policing, and that’s the gap we want to fill with these new positions”, Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan told army radio.

Israeli security forces were searching for the attacker, who is believed to be Palestinian.

“Our national sovereignty begins by exercising our sovereignty over Jerusalem”, he added.

A Palestinian man stabbed and wounded a young Jewish man in Jerusalem on Thursday before fleeing, in what Israeli police said was a suspected “terrorist” attack.

Since mid-September, an outburst of violence has killed at least 220 Palestinians and 34 Israelis.

Israeli paramedics said the incident took place at a Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives, in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

The stations will be installed in the neighbourhoods of Ras al-Amud, Jabal Mukaber, Silwan, Issawiya and Sur Baher.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said that the Palestinian attacked the 18-year-old victim near a bus station, stabbing his neck and back.
