At a checkpoint near Nablus, Israeli paramilitary police shot dead a Palestinian who they said had charged at them with a knife. That law imposes a minimum sentence of three years on rock throwers, and can strip them and the parents of minors of losing social security benefits. The Palestinian health ministry said the dead man was 51. The Palestinians say it’s rooted in frustrations over Israel’s almost half a century-long occupation.

In a joint address delivered Thursday with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned Israel not to turn the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict into a “religious” dispute.

According to Shehab News, a spokesman for the Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements in Beit Ummar, Mohammed Awad, said the incident occurred after Israeli soldiers prevented people from passing to the funeral that was taking place there.

Tsipras told Abbas, “My trip to Palestine comes in rough times that are shaded with great tension and violence against civilians, which amplifies our concern”. No Israelis were hurt in that attack, Samri added.

US Secretary of State John Kerry addresses a press conference during his visit to Jerusalem on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.

“Is there a chance of winning I think this is really, really not a military question, that it is very, very much linked to government decisions”, he told Israel’s Army Radio. Israel says of those killed 58 were attackers and the others died in clashes with Israeli forces.

The violence was sparked following unrest surrounding the east Jerusalem flashpoint site of the al-Aqsa mosque, holy to both Jews and Muslims, and spread out to outbursts of violence throughout Israel and the Palestinian territories.

He said the fence would fill in a gap in the security barrier Israel began building in the early 2000s in response to Palestinian attacks.

Tsipras went on to urge Israel to take “bold steps” on the Palestinian issue, stressing his support for any worldwide initiative in this regard.
