Palmer’s grandson leads U.S. tour event

Sam Saunders earned a one stroke lead following the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship on Thursday.

While Kizzire said he will have a slight advantage because of his familiarity with the course, he added that the course is much different than when he last played at Grand National.

Saunders is currently 143rd in the FedEx rankings, but requires a top-125 finish in the overall standings to qualify for the play-offs.

The field also includes a few players with local ties, including three current or former standouts for neighboring Auburn University.

Saunders made it through the first day without a bogey, closing his round by sinking a birdie putt on the par-4 ninth hole. Sarah Kemp, Lee-Anne Pace, Nannette Hill and Wei-Ling Hsu were 4 under.
