“It’s a huge misfire”, said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, adding, “We won’t see another Peter Pan film for awhile”. Sony’s “The Walk” stumbled in its wide release, expanding from 448 Imax and premium large format theaters to more than 2,500 locations, and eking out $3.6 million in the process. It has made a paltry $6.4 million in its initial two weeks.

“Pan’s” failure continues a rocky stretch for Warner Bros., which greenlit the picture with ambitions to turn it into a family-friendly franchise. In its second weekend the sci-fi adventure “The Martian” is exceeding expectations with an estimated $37 million as of Sunday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Starring Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund and newcomer Levi Miller as the boy who wouldn’t grow up, Pan was plagued by negative media coverage going into its opening, after being pushed back from a July release date and earning criticism for casting white actress Rooney Mara as Native American princess Tiger Lily.

He also believes competition in the family market from the Halloween-themed animated feature “Hotel Transylvania 2” hurt “Pan”. Among the highlights, the Matt Damon film about a stranded astronaut scored the studio’s biggest opening weekend in South Korea with $12.7 million.

“Inside Out”, the beloved Pixar film about a young girl’s emotional life, passed the $800 million mark last week after bringing in $11.7 million in its first six days of release in China. Playing in just four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, the voluble tech drama written by Aaron Sorkin earned $521,000 with a per-screen average of $130,000. Globally, “The Martian” has earned $227.7 million, putting it in good position to make a healthy return on its $108 million production budget.

“The Visit”, M. Night Shyamalan´s low-budget thriller about a trip to grandma´s house gone awry, brought in $2.4 million in 10th place.

In its third week in theaters, “The Intern,” starring Robert De Niro as a 70-year-old interning for a fashion website founder, played by Anne Hathaway, held firm at fourth place with $8.7 million in box office receipts.
