Panthers good enough to overcome mistakes, beat Saints 41-38

Brandin Cooks spent a lot of time during the offseason working with Drew Brees to strengthen their chemistry.

In addition to coverage mix-ups, the Saints were hurt by penalties, committing 11 for 104 yards – several of the drive-sustaining variety on third down.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is thriving this season with the game on the line. “But today was one of those mornings where someone sent me the TV copy, and…you got to be able to get that”. Eight plays later, Sam Bradford threw a TD pass, opening a 35-point run for Philadelphia that included a punt return, blocked punt and interception return that all went for touchdowns in a 35-28 loss for Belichick, Brady and Co.

“I even thought the play was over”, Anthony said.

The Titans (3-9) had not won on their own field since October 12, 2014, when they needed a blocked field goal to beat these very same Jaguars 16-14.

“He’s been clutch”, tight end Greg Olsen said. “I am really proud of what he did and the confidence with which he played”.

The Eagles improved to 5-7 and moved into a tie for second place in the NFC East, a half-game behind the Washington Redskins, who play the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.

Johnson, a rookie, had 99 yards on 22 carries in his first start and caught one of two TD passes by Carson Palmer, who led an offense that rolled up 524 yards. Running back Jonathan Stewart had a five-yard scoring run on a pitch from Newton. Carolina players seemed to think the play was over and watched as Anthony raced 31 yards for a 14-0 Saints lead.

As you likely may have seen in a few of my recent articles, I’ve been advocating that the Saints take a stud defensive lineman that can be a dominant pass rusher and run-stuffer in the middle of their defensive line (like Emmanuel Ogbah of Oklahoma State), to put with the great young nucleus of players that they acquired this year as they go through the motions of an on-going rebuilding project.

The Panthers were in danger of losing their first game of the season, trailing by four late in the game when Newton completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to ex-Jet Jerricho Cotchery with 1:05 left in the game to push the Panthers to 12-0. “I didn’t hear a whistle, and I kind of waited, then I kept going”.

The Eagles came into the game with a 4-7 record and had given up 45 points apiece in consecutive weeks heading into a meeting with a Patriots team that had not lost back-to-back games since 2012, but pulled off a stunning result.

Defensive tackle Kevin Williams helped the New Orleans Saints defense make National Football League history Sunday afternoon. Panthers safety Kurt Coleman’s interception of Brees was his sixth this season and fifth in his past six games.
