Pantone Reveals Color of the Year for 2016

For the first time ever, Pantone has selected not one, but two shades for 2016 Color of the Year: Rose Quartz, a pale pink, and Serenity, a baby blue.

“The move to softer, more tranquil colors that provide a counterpoint to the business and complexity of our lives has been trending during the past year”, said Lynne Meredith, vice president of product development, Surya.

Paired together, Pantone says the colors bring a “cool, refreshing tone” and “lighthearted, healthy glow”. “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure”, Pantone said. We have previously highlighted similar color inspirations that work perfectly with each shade – here we have an icy blue and silver grey and this combination shows shades similar to Rose Quartz with other blush pinks and gold. What’s even more powerful, the blending of these two shades challenges gender norms, a movement towards gender equality! Variations of this hue will be seen in a variety of textures that make it wearable throughout the year, from warming and comforting plush wools and faux furs to more ethereal feeling, lightweight linens and cottons. Featuring the pastel shades and a wider palette of preppy orange, yellow and purple tones, the collection focuses on keeping eyes and lips on trend. As far as color trends go, these selections are standouts due to their simplicity, as they are all shades of white.

Pantone pulled a fast one this year with its much-ballyhooed color selection by naming not one but two colors as the be-all and end-all of fashion for the coming year.

Still, the chosen Colors of the Year will likely guide the paint and interior choices of designers and clients in 2016. Serenity and Rose Quartz are also a popular choice for jewelry and fashion accessories and wearable technology. If you are wondering how to wear the trendy colors, Sephora has you covered in the makeup department.

Along with these two colors of the year for 2016, Pantone released eight palettes of complimentary color pairings.
