Papy Djilobodji joins Sunderland

Sunderland have confirmed Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji as David Moyes’ first signing as manager.

The central defender had only moved to Stamford Bridge last summer, after a move from Nantes. The Senegal global struggled to break into the first-team at Stamford Bridge, making just one appearance for the Blues in the League Cup.

The Senegal worldwide becomes former Manchester United manager David Moyes’s first signing as a Sunderland manager and would hope to put his Chelsea nightmare behind him.

He told swfc.co.uk: “The club, the manager and what the team achieved last season, it’s the kind of thing you want to be part of” and admitted “as a player, you want to be part of a club that is pushing forward and Sheffield Wednesday certainly fits the bill”.

Djilobodji joined Chelsea from Nantes last summer but did not feature much for the Blues, his one appearance coming in added time at the end of a Capital One Cup win at Walsall.

David Moyes will be delighted to bring in the powerful defender and potentially partner him with Lamine Kone.

A watertight defence could be the difference between a safe mid-table position and another struggle this season for the Wearside club, with supporters understanding the importance of keeping clean sheets.

Sunderland also announced the signing of the 27-year-old on their official website.

Djilobodji is not the clown he was made out to be at #CFC, but how the hell have they made a £5m profit on him?
