That weight was the highest entered by any competitor in the event, as the Nigerian power-lifter established a wide gap to her closest challengers.

Great Britain’s Paralympians have won more medals at Rio 2016 than they managed four years ago in London, with two days of the Games still remaining.

On Friday, Ruzhdi won his first Paralympic medal in the shot put, throwing 12.33m to smash his own world record and clinch the gold by nearly a meter’s margin.

Nearest challengers Britain also put on a great show with cyclist Dame Sarah Storey leading the way as they achieved their best medal haul since Seoul 1988 on the final full day of action at Rio 2016. Long won silver in the 400 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and the 4×100 34 pt. freestyle relay, while snatching bronze in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Scotsman Reid overcame Hewett 6-2 6-1 to add the Paralympic title to the Wimbledon and Australian Open grand slams he won earlier this year.

And Xu did just that in the second half of the 100 meter butterfly as she surged into first place down the stretch and hung on to win by a slim margin with her gold medal efforts earning a standing ovation from the spectators.

Rio said farewell to the Paralympics Sunday (Sep 18) in a closing ceremony showcasing Brazil’s love for music and celebrating what many consider to have been a surprisingly successful Games.

“We were averaging about 32kmph for the first 45km and everyone seemed happy to sit behind me, which was pretty frustrating”.

No story was more moving than that of 37-year-old Belgian Marieke Vervoort, who won a silver medal in wheelchair racing.

It was Zhou’s third gold medal of the Rio Games after her successes in the 4x400m T53/54 and the Women’s 400m – T53.

The first four runners in the race, with Baka’s twin brother coming fourth, actually ran faster than the gold medal victor Matthew Centrowitz in the Olympics a month before.

“The time when I felt most pressure was Commonwealth Games in Glasgow”, he said. The 27-year-old crossed the line in one minute 47.45 seconds to beat the previous mark set by Australian Angela Ballard last year by three hundredths of a second.

Likewise, Zhou Xia broke the world record to win gold in the women’s 200m T35. Iran’s Javid Ehsani Shakib claimed bronze with 14.13m. Riding Valerius, the 26-year-old Wells put in an impressive performance to land a third medal in Rio after golds in the individual championship test grade IV and team championship event.
