Paramount pushes ‘The Big Short’ into awards season, sets December release date

Do the words “housing bubble”, “bailout” or “recession” mean anything to you?

To paraphrase Steve Carell’s character in the trailer, it’s the story of how the banks defrauded the American people, and of how a handful of outsiders saw that and put an end to it.

That’s part of the subject of Michael Lewis’ 2010 book The Big Short which deals with the build up to the crash through the eyes of some of the key players involved.

The all-star cast also includes Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell as a private investor, a Deutsche Bank trader and hedge fund manager respectively. The critically acclaimed source work, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, spent twenty-eight weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.

Also starring Tracy Letts, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Byron Mann, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong and Finn Wittrock, The Big Short is due to have its world premiere at AFI Fest at the beginning of December, before opening to a nationwide release on December 23.
