Parasailing mishap: Man falls from parachute, dies in Coimbatore

The head of a sports club which organised a parasailing event here during which a 53-year old man fell to death from a height of 50 metres has been booked for alleged negligence, police said today. The incident was captured in a cellphone.

Eyewitnesses present at the spot said that Rao who was on vacation was precariously hanging with his safety belt unfastened to the paragliding gears. Sources said he had suffered severe injuries on legs and hip. In a shortwhile he is seen falling on to the ground with a thud. As soon as Rao crashed on the ground, he was rushed in a vehicle that was used to tow the parachute to the hospital.

After examining Mr Rao, doctors declared him brought dead. On 31 January 2014, a 26-year-old from Bengaluru called Ramya crash-landed from a height of about 10,000 feet due to parachute malfunction at Omalur in Salem district, the Hindu added. It is known that his safety harness was not attached properly.

According to the reports, the organisers on the event, which was part of a three-day function organized by the Coimbatore Medical College, had not asked for police permission.

The police is in search of the parasailing operator, Glider Babu, who is now missing.
