Pardew tells Palace not to underestimate Rooney

Old Trafford legend Scholes has blamed Van Gaal’s “risk-free” tactical system for Wayne Rooney’s struggles in front of goal, saying any striker would be tearing his hair out at the lack of service.

“But it seems he (Van Gaal) doesn’t want players to beat men and it’s probably not a team I’d have enjoyed playing in”.

“You have an expression (in England)”. It has no effect, he doesn’t have the responsibility. For the benefit or the club or for his own benefit? “I think when you are a legend you have to speak to the manager or his friend Ryan Giggs or (vice-chairman) Ed Woodward but not because he shall be paid by the BBC or Sky and then have to say something”.

“I shall do everything for this club because I think with these fans, I have said many times, these fans are unbelievable”. When you think it can be done within one year, I have said it’s a process.

Louis Van Gaal himself would have wanted to win a few silverware this season given that United have not won anything since the 2013 Community Shield and the domestic cup competitions offered him that opportunity. Given that they have also got rid of many tough fixtures Van Gaal would now like to see his team build up a head of steam going into Christmas & New Year. Zaha will want to prove a point to United after failing to convince either David Moyes or Van Gaal he was good enough at Old Trafford. “That is your opinion”.

Manchester United have been known to take their foot off the gas in the first half this season. “You never know, as a manager but also as a player, how you can improve your shape or your finishing”, the Dutch manager explained.

Palace’s one dimension had been exposed, yet for all of United’s superior quality it became apparent why they had failed to score during their past two games, the second a Capital One Cup defeat by Middlesbrough that also went to extra-time. “Fantastic expression!” van Gaal told reporters. “Maybe [Rooney] is doing too much”. Just thinking about the Peter Taylor years makes me go all queasy. OK, our last results in the last three haven’t been what we wanted but the performance level has been there, apart from the Man City game.

The Red Devils are without injured trio Antonio Valencia, Memphis Depay and James Wilson for the trip to Selhurst Park- a ground which United have not lost at since 1994. “We respect what they do”.
