A SC teacher punished a first-grader for fiddling with her shoes a week into the school year by tossing her sandals into the trash.

The child’s mother, Chartrese Edwards, tells WSPA that the incident happened last week at Simpsonville’s Bryson Elementary School. When Edwards asked her why, Taraji said her teacher threw them in the trash can because she kept playing with them.

A first-grade teacher at Bryson Elementary School in Simpsonville was disciplined after she took a first grade girl’s shoes and put them in a trash can as punishment.

Taraji was made to walk around barefoot, then eventually directed to fish her footwear out of the garbage.

Understandably her mother thought the punishment was “malicious” and is asking for a just punishment, but the teacher, whose name has not been released by the school district, insisted that she had done nothing wrong.

“Greenville County Schools is taking this family’s concerns very seriously”.

She has since met with the school district, and is waiting for action to be taken. For now, the school district has approved a homeschool teacher for Taraji. “‘Yes I did.’ I told her to leave the shoes alone, and she did not listen to me'”. Edwards said the district told her it was unacceptable and they did not like what the teacher did.

Taraji says she is sad and embarrassed, and she “doesn’t want to get treated like this”. The investigation is not yet complete.

Edwards said she spoke with both the school’s principal and the teacher in question. “As this is a personnel matter, Greenville County Schools can not release the teacher’s name or the disciplinary action taken, if the investigation determines that discipline is warranted”.

The Greenville County Schools District, which houses Bryson Elementary, released a statement about the matter which confirms that the investigation into the teacher’s actions is now ongoing.

“[She said, ] ‘The children laughed at me and made fun of me for my shoes being dirty and smelly”.

Edwards said she’s not yet sure if she will send her daughter back to Bryson, and the family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Taraji to attend private school.
