Paris attacks: Malcolm Turnbull may offer peacekeepers as Syria solution emerges

Prime Minister Turnbull has emphasised that along with military action, a political solution is needed in Syria.

“We had a very good discussion about domestic policies, about global policies and there was again, very strong statements especially from the leaders of the big Muslim countries in the room”, said Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Turnbull appeared on ABC’s Insiders program from Turkey, which itself had suffered a large bombing attack only weeks ago.

“The suggestion that somehow Australia acting unilaterally to go and change the situation in the Middle East is foolhardy”, he told radio station 2GB.

“They sang their national anthem proudly and that is how all free people should respond to these assaults”, he said.

Eight extremists were killed in Paris, including seven in suicide bombings, after a series of attacks in which more than 140 people are feared dead. Today Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Trade Minister Andrew Robb attended the preliminary APEC ministerial meetings in Manila.

“We have every right to be furious and angry, but at the same time when you are committing Australian lives into those sorts of zones you must do it in a very clear headed way”.

A further two French suicide attackers have been identified, police said, while the identity of four other assailants, who were all killed, was still under review.
