Paris climate deal ‘our best chance’
U.S. President Barack Obama said the deal is “the best chance we have to save the one planet we have”, adding that it could be a “turning point” toward a low-carbon future. “Climate justice has won & we are all working towards a greener future”, Modi posted on Twitter.

So far, 189 of these “nationally determined contributions” have been submitted to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat, and they will now have to be updated every five years under the Paris Agreement.
Developed countries have reaffirmed their commitment in the deal to support poorer countries financially to cope with the impacts of climate change and recognised their historical responsibility, having contributed more to the problem of climate change, to support vulnerable countries who are impacted.
He also had a brief meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.
At the Conference of Parties (CoP), India provided leadership to the interests of the developing countries and lesser developed countries, Minister of Power Piyush Goyal said after the Paris accord was adopted.
As many as 195 countries have signed a global climate change agreement at the Conference of the Parties 21 (COP 21) held in Paris, France.
Ultimately, the proposal aims to cap the global rise in temperatures at 1.5 degree Celsius and to eventually achieve zero emissions – ensuring that man-made emissions can be absorbed by the planet.
The Paris agreement will replace the Kyoto Protocol of 1997.
“Although this deal is not entirely ideal and contains some content that needs to be improved, this doesn’t prevent us from taking a historic step ahead”, he said. Today it is the most lovely and the most peaceful revolution that has just been accomplished, he said after the landmark deal was inked by 196 nations.
Today is a historic day. The Paris deal gives developing nations like India, Nigeria and others some flexibility to balance their growth and emissions reductions. “The outcome has a bearing with the undertaking of climate change of the human being and our future of sustainable development”, China’s Special Representative on Climate Change Xie Zhenhua said after the adoption of the Paris agreement.

CSE director general Sunita Narain said the draft does not include any meaningful targets for developed countries to reduce emissions.
