Paris climate deal provides ‘best chance we have’ of saving the planet

He said part of this agreement includes reviews every five years, where countries will be required to come up with a more ambitious target than they had before.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said American funding of grant-based public projects centered on climate adaptation in developing countries would be doubled by 2020. Those countries’ greenhouse gas emissions must represent 55% of the world’s total. In a few weeks, I’m heading to Paris to meet with world leaders about a global agreement to meet this challenge. 195 nations committed to cutting emissions in a deal calling for global warming to remain well below the two-degree threshold, and effort to limit warming to 1.5 degrees.

Mr Key said despite that New Zealand would have to make significant changes, which could cost households $100 a year, to reduce emissions. In other words, this generation has taken vital steps to ensure that our children and grandchildren will see that we did our duty in securing the future of our planet.

“I believe this moment can be a turning point for the world”, the president said. No country is immune from the consequences of climate change, and no country can act alone.

Obama agreed “the problem’s not solved because of this accord”, but added that “the Paris agreement establishes the enduring framework the world needs to solve the climate crisis”. The most important thing for the global community to do is to keep things below that 2-degree mark, the conference delegates agreed, to ward off the most severe effect of global warming. The agreement says all countries must report on their emissions and their efforts the reduce them.

India’s concerns of both national and environmental targets were achieved in the Paris Agreement on climate change and a statement regarding this will be made in the Parliament this week, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said today.

The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister said the new agreement can also help to guide China’s future green development. Experts are under no illusion that celebrations and high-flown rhetoric are enough when it comes to rolling back greenhouse-gas emissions. “That’s true”, Mr. Kerry, who was President Obama’s lead negotiation for the deal, said on ABC’s “This Week”.

However, the targets set by nations will not be binding under the deal struck in Paris. Investors will encourage every country keen to build a sustainable economy to develop a long-term low-emissions development strategy, including carbon pricing schemes, so that investors know ambition levels over the short, medium- and long-term.

“In the face of an unprecedented challenge, you have demonstrated unprecedented leadership”, the UN Secretary General said taking the COP21 stage just minutes after the adoption of the agreement. We have (the planet) on loan from future generations.
