Paris Motor Show 2016: 2017 SsangYong Rexton takes shape

The first official images of the new SUV concept, called LIV-2, reveal a study for an upcoming production “large premium SUV”.

The LIV aspect of the name is short for “Limitless Interface Vehicle” (whatever that means) and is the final concept of the Y400 development model that will be launched in 2017. A turbocharged 2.0-litre GDi petrol engine will also be available, although SsangYong hasn’t released any details in regards to Carbon dioxide emissions or fuel economy.

Although it shares its overall silhouette with the LIV-1, new detailing includes 3D graphics for the LED taillights, larger radiator grille and air intakes, and more rakish headlights.

At the rear, the LIV-2 features wraparound LED tail lights, while the bumper gets a new diffuser that helps reduce visual bulk on the concept.

The LIV-2 is no spring chicken itself, though, having first been previewed by the LIV-1 concept in early 2013.

In the United Kingdom, the current SsangYong Rexton is powered by a 132kW 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine whereas local versions are sold with a 115kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. It is believed that the engines will make it to the production version, paired to a 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic transmission options.

The concept also features high levels of safety as well as a contemporary luxury interior equipped with a suite of advanced communication technologies, the Mahindra-owned 4×4 specialist claims. However, a new 8-speed automatic is said to replace the 7-speed unit by late 2018.
