Parisians use hashtag #porteouverte to offer their homes as shelter during attacks

The developing situation in Paris, in which a series of coordinated terror attacks has already claimed over 100 lives, is a dark stain on the world.

On Twitter, this offer came from the 18th arrondissement, the district south of the Stade de France, where multiple explosions were reported during a Germany-France soccer match-an offer of tea and clean sheets.

Using the hashtag #portouverte (OpenDoor), people took to social media to offer shelter and safety to anyone stranded in the French capital as president François Hollande declared a state of emergency across the country.

Facebook activated its “Safety Check” tool to allow users who were in Paris during the terror attacks to notify friends and family they were safe.

“People are being told to evacuate the places like restaurants and indeed concert halls where they have been going to on a Friday night, relaxing, going to for dinner with friends or family outside or attending a concert”, journalist Nabila Ramdani told the BBC. The hashtag symbolized USA homes offering a place to stay and hot meals due to airline cancellations or delays. And with public transport suspended in Paris, taxi drivers offered assistance and gave a free ride to those who were affected by the attacks. “Of course the obvious problem they are facing at the moment is how to go back home”.

How? By using it to let friends and loved ones know that they are safe.

Queues of people were also seen at French hospitals looking to donate blood in the wake of the attacks.
