“An off duty police officer shot a male early this morning that was trying to rob him in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn”, the union originally tweeted.

DNAinfo reports the man was attempting to rob the cop’s cousin near the intersection of 6th Avenue and Prospect Place. A shot was sacked during the confrontation, which ended with the suspect being transported to Methodist Hospital in stable condition.

Citing police sources, DNAinfo reported Tuesday afternoon that the man who was shot had tried to mug the off-duty NYPD sergeant’s cousin as the two left the bar.

Investigators believe there was a robbery taking place. I just suddenly heard these shots. “It was frightening”, Mike Edelman, 69, told the news site.

Twelve hours later, parts of Sixth Avenue and St. Marks Avenue in Park Slope are still closed due to the investigation, according to local residents.

It’s not clear what caused the gun to go off, but NYPD officials could be seen placing evidence markers around the normally bucolic neighborhood well into the morning.
