Parties prepare for presidential caucuses

The big difference between parties this year is that Democrats will have a presidential preference poll.

Caucus goers also pick issues for their party’s platform, and elect delegates who are supposed to represent them at local conventions this spring.

Delegates will attend the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio in July.

A candidate must secure at least 20-percent of the vote on Saturday to receive any delegates.

Caddo and DeSoto Parish voters who were registered in the Republican Party by December 1 were eligible to participate in the caucus from 4 p.m.to 8 p.m.at Shreveport’s Wyndam Garden Hotel.

“If you had victor take all, then the first 10 states, it might be over before they even got to Louisiana”, Kay Kellogg Katz, with the Louisiana Republican Party, said. Now delegates can choose to head to the national convention without pledging to support a candidate first. Republican Incumbents Norm Steen and Marc Dettenrieder have announced intentions to seek re-election.

The Democrats aren’t doing such an obvious job of keeping out voters who might back Bernie Sanders, but a closed caucus favors Hillary Clinton: The demographics of registered Democrats in Colorado match those of Clinton supporters. Tonight a total of 595 delegates are in play for them.

That’s because Colorado Republicans are not taking straw poll votes for president.

Voters in Missouri and IL still have two weeks to wait for presidential primary day, but it turns out St. Louis will play a role in how Kansas will decide on a Republican nominee.

Only the Democrats will have a statewide victor announced in Colorado on Tuesday night.

The art of persuasion will be on display at the caucuses as attendees promote their candidates of choice. Essentially the top three candidates will be allocated one delegate each from each congressional district. The only county races are those involving two county commissioner seats.

What if there is a tie at a Democratic precinct? .

Sanders generated an impressive turnout among young adults at the precinct caucuses, especially in Denver and Boulder, where lines of voters surrounded some precincts more than an hour after caucusing began.

Colorado Democratic Party rules state that a tie vote at the precinct is “determined by lot”, or chance.

The last contested race was eight-years ago, when Democrats chose to have a caucus before the May Primary Election.

Colorado’s caucuses, sometimes called a hybrid of a primary and a caucus, are a different animal than Iowa and Nevada, the previous caucus states, particularly for the Republicans this year. Registration starts at 6 p.m.
