Martinez stands at the kiosks of the closed West Oakland BART station, the closest stop where there was a fatal shooting on a BART train January 9, 2016 in Oakland, Calif. BART said it was limiting service between downtown San Francisco and stations across San Francisco Bay due to the closure. One witness said the victim was holding a knife, but no one remembers any type of argument before the shooting.
As the train approached the West Oakland station, just before the doors opened, the man pulled a gun and shot a passenger who was seated next to the door, according to the witness accounts reported by ABC7.
A KRON4 News crew is on the way to Oakland to gather information on this breaking story. He captured cellphone video of frightened passengers who got on the floor of the train when the shooting started. On Sunday, many passengers were feeling scared about riding BART.
Shortly before 8 p.m., BART police responded to a call of shots being fired by a man on a BART train and found a dead individual inside a train auto that had stopped at the station, BART police Lt. Kevin Franklin said.
Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage of the incident, Ledford said.
BART officials described the suspect as a bald, slim, 6-foot-3 Black man, wearing a green hooded jacket with tan military-style boots and a backpack.

Allison confirmed Sunday that the shooting was an isolated incident and not part of a terrorist attack. “People were screaming ‘get on the ground,”‘ Chapin said. “We didn’t know if there were terrorists there or what”.
