Passenger train derails in Spain, killing 2

The train crashed about 20 minutes into the trip, near the Spanish town O Porrino.

Amidst the casualties was the driver; two of the injured are in a critical condition. That’s about 450 kilometers (280 miles) northwest of Madrid.

About 60 passengers were on the Portuguese train when it derailed at 09:30 (07:30 GMT) near the town’s station. The back two wagons stayed upright but the first ended up significantly titled to one side.

Regional government in Galicia confirmed 47 people have been injured in the accident. A passenger said in a video posted on local daily La Voz de Galicia that the train suddenly started wobbling. The incident comes three years after Spain’s worst ever non-terrorism related rail disaster, which saw 79 people die after a high-speed train derailed. She said she had no further details about the American victim.

The derailment occurred on a straight stretch of track close to O Porrino station.

Adif, the company responsible for maintaining tracks across Spain’s rail network, says it has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
