The train was reportedly travelling from the city of Vigo in Galicia to Valença do Minho, a municipality and town in Portugal.

It also stated that although this route is a shared operation between RENFE and Portuguese National train Service, Comboios de Portugal, both the train driver and the train were Portuguese.

Adif, the company responsible for maintaining tracks across Spain’s rail network, says it has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Local Spanish officials said the accident took place in Galicia Province on Friday. The first of the train’s three carriages went completely off the rails, while the other two derailed partially. Eyewitnesses told local news outlets that the train hit a tower or post next to the tracks after it began to derail just as it was arriving at the station.
