Passengers Hospitalized After Extreme Turbulence On Flight from China to Canada
Twenty-one passengers were sent to hospital after an Air Canada flight from Shanghai destined for Toronto hit major turbulence and was diverted to Calgary.

Luggage from overhead bins also came crashing down during the incident.
On Wednesday, an Alberta man was charged after police say he assaulted a flight attendant on an Air Canada flight en route to India, forcing the plane to return to Toronto.
“It was the flight from hell”, said passenger Connie Gelber. To me, it’s a miracle we didn’t have worse happening. In the United States about 58 people are injured every year by turbulence while not wearing their seatbelts and between 1980 and 2008 at least two people died after not wearing their seatbelts in turbulence.
“The phones were wrecked. The girl sitting next to me, she was sleeping and she just fly up [to the ceiling]”. Everyone was injured. We thought we were dying.
“The first time was just a little shake, and then suddenly we go up quickly and we just fall down”, she said. “This was real life”.
“Air Canada will be making arrangements to accommodate all other passengers including those continuing on to Toronto”, Arthur said. Passengers were rebooked on another flight to Toronto.
“I would like to acknowledge the flight crew of AC088 whose care and professionalism has been recognized by other passengers and I would like to thank our employees on the ground in Calgary and at other stations for their important contributions in response”.
This is the second time in as many days that a passenger has been taken into custody at Pearson following an in-flight incident. A member of the Air Canada special assistance team was at the hospital to assist passengers and their families.

The Transportation Safety Board said an investigation will be conducted focusing on the digital flight recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, as well as by interviewing the crew.
