Investigators from France’s anti-terror police are leading the inquiry, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor’s office said.

“He was stopped by passengers”, Christophe Piednoel, a spokesman for French railway SNCF said on iTele television.

The gunman was reportedly wielding a Kalashnikov rifle, an automatic handgun and several knives.

One of the injured was believed to be a Briton.

Thalys said in a tweet that travellers were safe and the situation was under control.

“It is too early to discuss hypotheses”, said Mr. Brandet.

France remains on edge after Islamic extremists attacked the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket in Paris in January, killing 17 people.

France’s interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve is en route to the Arras, 115 miles (185 kilometers) north of Paris, where the train stopped after the attack.
