If McIlroy is able to hold off Day, Spieth and a rich pool of top players in ominously good form to win this week, he will become just the sixth player in golf history to complete the career grand slam by winning all four majors.

“Being a feel player, my glove and shoes are a very important part of my success on the golf course, and G/Fore’s tailored fit and top-notch material provide me the best chance to win”, he said in a statement.

“My game feels good”, insisted McIlroy, who took three days off last week following his semi-final defeat in defence of his Match Play title before getting down to work with coach Michael Bannon at home in Florida.

For my 20 years out here I think I’ve achieved a lot, and if that’s all it entails, then I’ve had a pretty good run.

The Match Play victory shot Day into the No. 1 spot in the world rankings, supplanting Jordan Spieth. Here are some of his thoughts on Rory and Jordan Spieth and Jason Day and all the rest.

“I’m like, ‘I just do not like the game right now”.

“But once I’d done it, I enjoyed it”, he said.

“You have to perform, because if you don’t perform, then you’re off the tour”, Day said. “I had a lot of fun here”, Day said.
