‘Past Few Days Have Been Difficult’ for Tennessee’s Pat Summitt, Family Says

According to reports, Summitt’s family and friends are preparing for the worst.

The #PrayForPat hashtag has been making the rounds this morning on social media as word is spreading that legendary basketball coach Pat Summitt is in failing health in Tennessee- fighting Alzheimer’s Type Dementia.

Former Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt is surrounded by those closest to her as she struggles in … She also was a seven-time national coach of the year, led the 1984 USA women’s national team to a gold medal, was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2012.

She’s a peer who began her coaching career around the same time he did.

In addition to her collegiate basketball success as a player (UT-Martin) and coach, Summitt also was co-captain on the U.S. Olympic women’s team in 1976 and led the 1984 Olympic team to a gold medal as head coach.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer retired at the end of the 2011-12 season after coaching at Tennessee for 38 years.

Though battling the disease, Summitt did not step down from her post until April of 2012.

The fear is that Summitt may not have long after being moved to hospice care. Shortly after her diagnosis in 2011, she founded the Pat Summitt Foundation Fund aimed at raising money for Alzheimer’s research.
