The officer said given the personnel and strategic assets located at the base, combing operations are going on continuously by security forces.
The official said the officer and two other soldiers were injured Sunday when a bomb they were trying to defuse exploded during a search of the site. “We are sure that all the terrorists will be killed”, Rajnath told the media here.
Officials had declared the attack over the same day hours after four gunmen were killed in an intense gun battle, but operations resumed Sunday after soldiers came under fire from two gunmen.
A senior police official while citing the reason for the operation taking so long, said that the Army and para-military forces have surrounded the entire air force base, which is spread in a huge area and has undulating terrain, buildings and forest area which has to be searched very carefully to avoid casualties.
The fact that seven Indian troops inside a military base were killed despite intelligence alerts has angered many in India.
The U.S has always maintained that Pakistan requires to do more to rein in terrorists who target neighbouring countries.
“Security agencies are engaged in a gunfight with two terrorists”, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said on Sunday.
The attack comes a week after Indian prime minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Pakistan in a bid to accelerate peace talks between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
Security establishment was anticipating an attack after Superintendent of Police of Punjab police Salwinder Singh was abducted by a group of gunmen in army uniform in Pathankot on Thursday night. This happened near Damtal hills on the Punjab-Himachal border just 15 kilometers from the Pakistan border.
Yesterday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation arising out of the terror attack and is believed to have discussed with top officials its ramifications on ties with Pakistan.
India says the group is backed by Pakistan, but Islamabad denies this.
