Patriots beat Saints in preseason opener, 34-22

New Orleans Saints running back, Mark Ingram, had a great first half, scoring two rushing touchdowns. The big play of the second half and possibly of all the games this week, was New England defensive end, Trey Flowers, scoring a strip sack touchdown against New Orleans quarterback Luke McCown. He converted a fourth-down run.

It’s no surprise to find LeGrand in New England given Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s well-documented fondness for Rutgers alums from the Greg Schiano era. The rookie left the field after catching an 8-yard pass on New England’s final drive of the second quarter and landing awkwardly on his left elbow.

Mitchell, a fourth-round draft pick out of Georgia, caught a pass near the sideline. But as he was dragged down from behind by Saints cornerback De’Vante Harris, Mitchell’s arm bent awkwardly as he landed on the ground.

SP: He’s someone who’s been smart, a quick study and that’s helped him because he’s been able to train at a couple of different receiver positions. White broke free for a 56-yard catch-and-run, which set up a LeGarrette Blount touchdown run.

With the Saints driving in the third and the Patriots up 17-16, rookie Cre’Von LeBlanc’s one-handed highlight reel worthy interception turned some heads.

The starting O-line, presented for the goal of record-keeping, was Solder, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason and Marcus Cannon.

Marcus Cannon let a defender slip inside him on one sack, and a blitzing Saints linebacker got to Garoppolo on another, both on the Pats’ third possession of the night.

Grayson would bounce back on his third drive of the game leading the Saints to its first score of the preseason.

Martellus Bennett, who New England acquired from the Bears in an offseason trade, was Garoppolo’s favorite target early on. Matt Schaub made a successful return to his first National Football League home, passing for 179 yards and leading three scoring drives in Atlanta’s 23-17 victory over Washington.

The inspirational LeGrand addressed members of the Patriots and New Orleans Saints with his message of overcoming adversity after watching a joint practice between the teams Wednesday in Foxborough, Mass. They included Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan, Logan Ryan, Dion Lewis, and Rob Ninkovich.
