Patriots choose to kick to open OT, fall to Jets 26-20
Patriots coach Bill Belichick claimed in his postgame remarks that he meant to kick off and had “no regrets” about the decision.

The New York Jets beat the New England Patriots 26-20 in overtime in a huge game that kept the Jets’ playoff hopes alive.
According to STATS, teams have opted to kick off in overtime 13 times since 1997 and are 6-7 in those games. They were on a three-game winning streak, playing their best football of the season and favored by double-digits.
A win next week at Buffalo gives the Jets a wild-card berth. It’s also fairly uncommon for Bill Belichick to find himself outcoached, and his players out-thought, but that certainly seemed to be the case in New England’s 26-20 loss to the Jets. The Patriots can still clinch home field advantage in Week 17 with a win at Sun Life Stadium over the Miami Dolphins, but if the Patriots lose that game, the victor of the Monday night game at Sports Authority Field between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Denver Broncos will be able to take over the No. 1 seed with a Week 17 win.
Starting in late October, the New York Jets went through a stretch when they won just once over five games. Carolina, 14-0 and a 7-point favorite against a team it embarrassed 38-0 two weeks ago, lost 20-13 at Atlanta as Matt Ryan outplayed Newton.
“I’m excited… but we have to take care of business”, said the quarterback, who has completed 131 of 203 passes for 1,525 yards, 13 touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 106.5 during the winning streak. But after Slater won by calling heads, the first words out of his mouth were, “We want to kick”.
To complicate things even further, the referee, Clete Blakeman, appeared to have suggested that Slater kick-before Slater even made his choice.
“The only confusion was whether or not we got to choose which direction we got to kick the ball. We just didn’t play good enough defense”. Matthew Slater, Patriots captain, chose heads. “That was the end of our decision making”. You get Gradkowski back to her you know you have Gradkowski back to full strength governor when you have him in go up you can do.
“I would say not at all”, Harmon said, not wanting to use injuries as a crutch.
Immediately after the game, Jets receiver Brandon Marshall said he asked Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, “What were you guys thinking?”
Despite most of MetLife Stadium being dumbfounded, Belichick insisted everything was fine.
The thing about controversial game decisions in the National Football League is you are a genius when they work and a fool when they don’t.
Tom Brady On Patriots’ Loss To Jets Patriots QB Tom Brady offers reaction after Sunday’s loss to the Jets.
Sheldon Richardson: The defensive lineman caused real havoc for the Jets. “We’re on to next week”. Despite trailing by seven points at the end of the second quarter, New England elected to play conservatively and run out the clock in the final two minutes before halftime, instead of running their usual two-minute offense. The Pats were lost on a pick play on a 48-yard pass from Fitzpatrick to Quincy Enunwa, then Chris Ivory ran for a four-yard gain, then Fitzpatrick hit Brandon Marshall for a 20-yard gain, and then, it was over.
Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes for Kansas City, and the game clock finally stopped Johnny Manziel as the Chiefs held on to beat the Cleveland Browns 17-13 on Sunday for their franchise record-tying ninth consecutive victory.
Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 412 yards and three touchdowns and running back Tim Hightower rushed for 122 yards and two scores, while five Saints receivers amassed at least 45 receiving yards-including Brandin Cooks’ 123-yard effort. That was the only drive on which Brady got comfortable against an aggressive defense that pressured and hit him all game. Even former Patriot wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins caught four passes for 27 yards against New England before leaving the game with an injury.
“I think we have some mental toughness”, Brady said. “A lot of guys have been in and out of the lineup”.

Earlier, it was Marshall, who led all receivers with eight catches for 115 yards, catching a 2-yard Fitzpatrick scoring pass for a 10-3 Jets’ lead and then a 33-yarder from Fitzpatrick for a 17-3 lead in the third quarter.
