Patriots: Dion Lewis Out for year with Torn ACL

The New England Patriots are going to have to go the rest of the season without their 2015 breakout running back Dion Lewis. It’s a big hit to the offense, but the Patriots should have no problem replicating his production with a by-committee approach, as New England has great RB depth, sufficient to keep their Super Bowl run afloat.

Coach Bill Belichick said at a news conference earlier Monday that he had no information on Lewis’ condition. Belichick has had to do lots of shuffling because of injuries – and New England still keeps rolling.

While there’s no one who can do what Dion Lewis does, no one who is that kind of weapon, the Patriots have players in-house who will pick up a few of the slack.

It is Dion frickin’ Lewis. He won’t be as dynamic as Lewis, but he certainly will be able to fare well enough in the passing game to make up for his absence. He worked very well when paired with Jimmy Garoppolo, and for a time it looked like he would beat out Lewis and Travaris Cadet for the role as the team’s third down back.

People come into our lives all of the time. The guy had sucked before this season and there is no way around that. He has had one good season since entering the National Football League five years ago, and it was under the Belichick’s tutelage.

“I think at this point in the season everyone is a little banged up”, he said.

The exiled former Ravens running back said he would welcome the opportunity to work out for the Patriots, according to a tweet from ESPN’s Josina Anderson that Larry Brown Sports posted. Lewis caught 36 passes for 388 yards and two touchdowns, behind only Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski for most yards. Brady missed the milestone by 1 yard, but he did have his eighth straight game with at least two TD passes. The offense relies on short timing routes that exploit mismatches in open parts of field. Game after game, Lewis is matched up one-on-one in space with slow linebackers and poor tackling cornerbacks. They kept Cousins upright, did a solid job picking up blitzes and just all around played better than any other unit wearing Burgundy and Gold. Unfortunately for him, that season is now over as he suffered an ACL tear this past weekend. The team will need a consistent contribution from Blount moving forward as he will most likely see the bulk of the carries. “So James is a guy who continues to get better”. Through seven games, Lewis had 234 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
