Patriots rout Texans, regain top AFC position
New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (87) catches a pass for a touchdown over Houston Texans strong safety Quintin Demps (27) during the first hall of an NFL football game Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015, in Houston.

New England got the ball to start the second half and would go up 20-6 after a Stephen Gostkowski field goal.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was certainly happy to have one of his top targets back in the fold as New England snapped a two-game losing streak. Tom Brady was noticeably more comfortable and in rhythm than he had been in the last two weeks as a result.
The Jets were just seven points shy of being the first team to hand the Patriots a loss this season, so they are well within their capabilities to pull off the upset the second time around.
“Great player”, O’Brien said of Brady. They struggle to run consistently, they call a ton of deep passes despite the fact that Hoyer doesn’t have the arm to be consistent with them, and the recent addition of direct snaps to several different players comprise a distraction in rhythm that is unnecessary and unproductive for the most part.
When New England Patriots running back James White made a sideline catch with 11:57 remaining in the third quarter, his toe was in bounds while his heel might have been out of bounds… or it might have been in bounds.
Much of the talk leading into the game was the reunion of sorts, with a number of former Patriots now employed by the Texans.
“He’s a huge influence on what we do offensively”, Brady said. All wasn’t roses for Martin though as he muffed a punt in the third quarter, and just like that Martin was not seen on the field again. Still, Gronkowski’s presence back on the field changed the complexion of the game on Sunday and the team’s outlook moving forward. In the secondary, All-Pro wideout DeAndre Hopkins was contained as well to just three receptions, as Hoyer was limited to completing just 12 of his 24 pass attempts for a meager 155 yards before being forced to leave the game with a possible concussion.
So, with the Patriots hitting a stretch of the most important games of the season, they are also getting healthier at just the right time. “It’s always good to make a play, get a touchdown”.
The color of the black cast surrounding Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt’s broken left hand matched his dark mood. “Now we need to work on controlling next Sunday”. The Texans are tied for the division lead with the Indianapolis Colts at 6-6, and a win over New England would greatly enhance their playoff chances.

The victory clinched a playoff spot for the Patriots. They’ve been particularly good in the month of December, where they’re 53-9 since 2001, which is the NFL’s best record in that span. If they can’t figure something out, the Patriots will be out of luck in the playoffs and doomed for an early exit in what will be looked back upon as perhaps Brady’s second greatest season of all time. “You want to be out there playing football, making plays”, Gronkowski said with a smile after the win.
