Patriots say kickoff in overtime was no mistake
The Jets’ offense responded by marching 80 yards in five plays for the game-winning touchdown in a 26-20 victory.

The Patriots gave the Jets the ball, and NY might carry it right into the playoffs. That day, Marshall caught just four passes for 67 yards in New England’s 30-23 win.
New England Patriots wide receiver Matthew Slater made a, let’s say questionable, decision during the overtime coin toss at their game against the New York Jets on December 27 that may have just let the Jets win. Kristine Gammer is celebrating the Jets win and her recent engagement; congratulations Kristine.
“Fun way to end the game, ” Decker said. “Those are the moments that you cherish”.
The Patriots were upset in overtime by the New York Jets, 26-20, after winning the post-regulation coin flip then curiously opting to kick off instead of receive. That decision worked, this one flopped. Slater looked very confused and asked Blakeman, “We won-don’t we get to choose…” before the microphones cut out. Slater was indeed instructed by his coach to tell referee Clete Blakeman that the Patriots wanted to defer possession in overtime.
“You hate to have them happen, certainly not throwing it to (Revis) – that would be my least favorite option on the play”, said Brady.
“I thought that was best thing to do”, Belichick said. The offensive line struggled to keep the pass rush at bay, particularly after New England lost tackle Sebastian Vollmer and his replacement LaAdrian Waddle to injury. And then, Fitzpatrick hit Decker on a fade behind Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler for New York’s fifth straight victory. New England didn’t deserve to win this game, and to be honest, with all of the injuries they are dealing with, I was surprised they got this game to overtime.
“We got something to play for now”, Buffalo running back Boobie Dixon said.
FITZ MAGIC: Fitzpatrick was 26 of 41 for 296 yards and three touchdowns, tying him with Vinny Testaverde for the single-season franchise mark of 29 TD tosses.
Neither has been to the playoffs in a combined 21 pro seasons.
“They’re so smart over there”, Marshall said. “I’m so proud of my teammates….”
Tom Brady is still standing. That was the only drive on which Brady got comfortable against an aggressive defense that pressured and hit him all game.
Carey’s 1-yard scoring reception put the Bears (6-9) ahead for good early in the fourth quarter. “We just had some bad luck, truthfully”, Brady said. “A lot of guys have been in and out of the lineup, a lot of guys coming in off the street trying to play and help us win”.
Brady and the offense did not convert its first third down until the fourth quarter.
The Dolphins had a first-and-goal from the Colts’ 5 in the final minute, but quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw three incomplete passes.
Bullcok’s 49-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter made it 20-13. He also kicked a 44-yarder. The Jets’ defense was everything it has been billed to be all season: talented on the back end, tough and terrorizing in the front.
It was a disappointing Sunday for the conference front-runners, as the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers suffered losses and failed to nail down the two No. 1 seeds.
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady stood by his coach after the game.
The Jets finished the game with 24 first downs and 428 yards of total offense, out of which, 143 came on the ground and 285 through the air. It’s good strategy. Unless [the Jets] score a touchdown, you get the ball back either way. Of the Jets’ four losses during that dark stretch, three came by seven points or fewer. The latter got his squad back into playoff contention after dressing them down following the Houston loss.

Said Pace, of the decision: “You’ve got a great quarterback like that, it’s 50/50”. It was the second week in a row that New England had scored a defensive touchdown.
