Patriots top Chiefs, return to AFC title game
The best present of all: a 27-20 win over the Chiefs and a trip to a fifth straight AFC Championship Game for Edelman and the Patriots. But New England’s previously struggling offense scored 27 points versus a Chiefs defense that had allowed only 11.6 points per game over its previous 11 games. After another Chiefs field goal the Patriots took a 14-6 lead at halftime. The Patriots’ annual AFC title-game appointment will indeed be kept after New England defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-20, in an AFC divisional round playoff game at Gillette Stadium.

But there was also excitement for the Patriots’ diminutive wide receiver, who has become a vital piece of the Patriots’ offense the last three seasons. That was a good defense, they were giving up eleven points per game in the last however many weeks.
“We wanted to get a play off right there”.
“It’s just football, so there’s a lot of emotion, especially in this game”.
The defending champions would play in Denver on January 24 if the Broncos win, or at home if it’s the Steelers.
Coach Andy Reid said the Kansas City Chiefs’ deliberate pace toward the end of Saturday’s playoff loss to the New England Patriots was part of their plan and that the Chiefs executed it well. “But this is going to be a huge challenge for us”, he said of playing the Broncos. “In nobody’s eyes felt like we were going to lose that game or any type of give-up or anything like that”.
Brady threw for two touchdowns to Gronkowski and sneaked in for another just one play after diving for the pylon after a 10-yard scramble that was his longest postseason run in nine years. Brady is clearly better, stats don’t lie, when the game is on the line, you want Tom. Obviously, if you get stopped the clock is running. Most notably, Gronkowski was able to get on track, catching seven passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns. However, the impact made by wide receiver Julian Edelman in his first game back from injury was the overwhelming key. With Edelman and tight end Rob Gronkowski back in the lineup, Tom Brady threw for more than 300 yards for just the second time since Edelman broke his foot. “They’re hard workers, they’re great players”.
“It was a great win, took everything we got”.
“But I’m proud of my guys”.
“It’s insane. Three years in a row we’re going to the conference championship”, he said.
A unusual play had given Arizona a 20-13 lead with 3:44 to play in the fourth quarter.
After trading punts twice, the Patriots started on their 2 when Amendola was flagged for a helmet-first hit to coverage man Jamell Fleming. Early in the third quarter, Brady found Gronkowski in the corner of the end zone. The play was upheld, but did little to deter Brady as he leaped over the masses on the next play for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-3.
“I thought I could try to make it. We were close”.
Patriots defensive lineman Chandler Jones also had a big play to finish an odd week that started on Sunday when he left his home reeking of marijuana and showed up shirtless and confused at the local police station.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick preferred to spread the credit around.
Gronkowski caught an 18-yard pass from Brady on the next play.
Alex Smith managed to get his Chiefs down the field at the end of the half but had to settle for a field goal after missing high in the end zone twice.
The Chiefs closed within the final margin after Charcandrick West scored on a 1-yard run with 73 seconds remaining.

Brady joined Kenny Stabler of the Oakland Raiders (1973-77) as the only quarterbacks in National Football League history to take their teams to five consecutive conference championship games.
