Patti Smith’s Memoir Just Kids Will Get A Showtime Series

Showtime bought the rights to Patti Smith’s 2010 National Book Award-winning memoir, Just Kids, for a limited series that will be co-written and produced by Smith and Logan.

For those anxious that the transition from book-to-film could skew or water down Smith’s story, don’t-Nevins also noted that Smith won’t just be involved in the process, but will actually be doing the screenwriting herself, along with John Logan, the creator of Penny terrible.

The cable network announced Tuesday that the book will be made into a limited series, with Penny awful EP John Logan set to co-write and produce along with Smith. The book chronicles Smith’s relationship with artist and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, whom she lived with in New York from 1967-74.

John Logan received the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critic Circle and Drama League awards for his play Red, which has had more than 200 productions across the United States and has been presented in over 30 countries.

You wouldn’t happen to be a fan of both punk music icons and “Penny Dreadful” by any chance? In October she’s publishing “M Train”, her sequel to “Just Kids“. It’s believed Smith started writing a screenplay adaptation for it the following year.

Most importantly, who’s going to be cast as Smith? He said that the book serves as an inspiring story of friendship, love, and endurance that led him to believe that if put into the screen, will yield a successful amount of popularity and awe the audience.
