Dustin Johnson grabbed a three-shot lead at the BMW Championship after birdieing four holes late in his third round on Saturday.

At 23-under 265, Johnson won by three over Casey and likely locked up PGA Tour Player of the Year honors in the process.

In addition, a victory would put Johnson atop the US PGA playoff season points standings in quest of the $10 million bonus paid out after the Tour Championship in two weeks at Atlanta.

Day has a history of back issues, most recently at the Dell Match Play in the spring.

“To keep a clean sheet, I was very happy with”, said Casey, who posted a bogey-free round in “ugly” conditions. “I feel like I’ve got a good game plan out here”.

He has now won 12 titles on the PGA Tour since 2008 but he was pushed all the way by England’s Paul Casey. Not that they were rooting against Dustin Johnson, but certainly there was a sense that when he matched up his physical gifts with all the other elements that go into playing golf. well, look out. “The ease to which Dustin Johnson makes it look, especially when he’s starting to wedge it in the a year ago like he has and his putting, is a great thing”.

An awesome talent, Johnson is starting to pile up the victories to prove it. With the FedEx Cup play-offs winding down, players are jockeying for position trying desperately to make the top 30 and advance to East Lake.

Johnson seeks his third title of the year after the US Open and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone invitational.

“I’m seeing the lines really well”.

And there was the cold-blooded eagle on the 15th hole, after Casey, for a few precious moments at least, trimmed the deficit to a single shot.

“It’s nothing he hasn’t dealt with before”, Day’s agent Bud Martin said. “There’s 10 million good reasons to play aggressive at home”.

Injured: Jason Day pulled out of the BMW Championship with a back probkem. Johnson then stepped up and knocked his putt in for three. From there, Johnson made pars into the house for the win.

36-hole joint-leader Roberto Castro claimed third spot to safely qualify for East Lake later this month, while a round-of-the-day 64 from Charl Schwartzel parachuted him in to a tie-for-fourth alongside Adam Scott, J.B Holmes, Matt Kuchar and Ryan Palmer.
