Paul Pogba has paid a touching tribute to his mother after the Manchester United midfielder made his debut in Friday night’s 2-0 victory over Southampton.

Manchester United then switched up the gears as the half carried on, and the first incisive moment brought the first goal of the season at Old Trafford.

Ibrahimovic and Pogba glory aside, the most important part of the game was an improvement on defense that can be credited to Eric Bailly.

He added: “I have so many good players”. He holds the ball better than anyone. Paul is back at his home, but still not with this team [before]. It’s hard to take this first goal, because we have some situations before Manchester United.

Speaking in his postmatch news conference, Mourinho said: “He was fantastic”.

For United, it was an opportunity to showcase the fruits of their summer crafts at full strength, a chance to prove that they really are here to challenge for silverware.

Southampton were more than happy to allow United possession as they threatened on the counter-attack, with Nathan Redmond looking particularly lively in the early stages, but they lacked a cutting edge and never truly threatened David de Gea’s goal. And it was a good start.

After completing his world-record transfer from Juventus, Paul Pogba played his first game for Manchester United as they hosted Southampton on Friday. He needs to settle in, and the rest will come by itself. “We need to put the puzzle together and then work on it”.

Pogba is encouraged by the way the team is performing this season. He’s so comfortable in the skin of a star, so confident, the way he plays.

“The player was feeling not loved”, said Mourinho. I am very happy for the team. “I couldn’t be happier with him”. “That is all we can do”.

The youngsters will be looking up to Ibrahimovic and he has gone the ideal way about proving he still has ability to play a massive role for Mourinho’s side. He pointed to Marouane Fellaini as one illustration. “The crowd was magnificent”. Fellaini was a clear example … it is changing completely.

“It’s great. I’m very happy for the team”, Pogba told Sky Sports. For me you don’t leave for sure.
