The defender also felt he had been hard done-by for Newcastle’s second goal, which came courtesy of an Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty after referee Mike Dean adjudged Smalling to have brought down the Serbian in the box midway through the second half.

Rooney has come under fire for his performances and lack of goals this season, but has now struck four times in his last three games, including a brace in Tuesday’s 3-3 draw against the Magpies.

“Fellaini’s header – what a chance to make it 4-2 – and Jesse Lingard has had a great chance, and that’s just what I expect”.

Wayne Rooney scored twice, including the 79th minute goal that put United 3-2 up, but the captain agreed with his manager in casting a downbeat tone.

“It does feel like a defeat”.

While Van Gaal was critical of his side’s finishing, he was also disappointed with the awarding of Newcastle’s penalty.

“If you take a two-goal lead, we should be taking all three points and killing the game off”.

“They are people who don’t watch football”.

Louis van Gaal blamed his Manchester United players for throwing away victory at Newcastle after Paul Dummett’s 90th minute equaliser punished the visitors following a succession of missed chances.

“We could have scored six but you have to score one more than the opponent”. “I have said that to the players”.

“Newcastle only wanted to attack. No. We were unlucky in decisions of the referee and a deflected shot and we did not finish our chances”.

“We should have finished this match much earlier”, said van Gaal. “We have given it away”, said Van Gaal. We haven’t won in a few games but the crowd were behind the team all game and I want to thank them for that.

“People thought it would be a 0-0 and it was a classic at 3-3”.

Rooney, who edged to within eight goals of Sir Bobby Charlton’s club record of 249 with a double at St James’ Park, admitted that his side had to find a balance between attack and defence after a game which went some of the way towards exciting the travelling fans. When you lose two points it’s very, very sad.

At the final whistle Newcastle’s 21-year-old Serbian made a beeline to ensure he swapped shirts with the Rdds 30-year-old striker and afterwards he scoffed at the critics who suggest Rooney is finished.
