The AMD AM4 socket is a new unified socket infrastructure that provides compatibility between 7th Generation AMD A-Series processors and the upcoming high-performance “Summit Ridge” AMD desktop CPU.

Bristol Ridge is created to take on Intel’s newly released Kaby Lake offering, and has up to four Excavator x86 CPU cores and covers a wide power band spanning 65W to 35W.

The new APUs also support 4K Ultra HD video in both H.264 and H.265 formats, and will also be able to run Windows 10 PCs games with DirectX 12 APIs.

Kevin Lensing, Corporate VP and general manager of computing and graphics for AMD stated the following within the press release sent over earlier today.

7th Generation AMD A-Series desktop processors consist of 65-watt and 35-watt versions, offering superior power efficiency.

There is now no pricing or release date for the new processors, although they are expected to appear in AMD partner PCs (namely HP and Lenovo) first.

The AMD processors deliver “high-speed processing, smooth eSports gaming, and enhanced HD and UHD streaming capabilities”, including the highest memory bandwidth to date for an AMD desktop platform.
