PDP alliance should take responsibility for current Kashmir situation: Congress

The BJP’s statement came after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig reportedly demanded chief minister Mehbooba Mufti’s resignation for the government’s failure to control the volatile situation in Kashmir.

However, Baig tried to tone down his attack by saying Mehbooba Mufti treats him like an “elder brother” and his advice to her is not to run away due to the “uprising” but to fight it out. We have not benefited them a bit, we have done nothing for our workers.

HM Rajnath Singh taking the cognisance of the issue looked absolutely miffed with the Hurriyat and later in the press conference mentioned that the act was neither ‘insaniyat (humanity), not Kashmiriyat’. “That is the real reason why we are in trouble today”, he said.

Mr Baig has been vocal about his worry that ruling party, the PDP, is the direct target of people’s anger as the Kashmir Valley is rocked by a cycle of violence that has left 70 people dead and thousands injured in clashes with security forces ever since Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani was killed in July. He said that the visit was high on symbolism and low on delivery. “It’s a case of a General who has a broader view of the situation while the soldier at the ground has a different (view)”.

“There is no alternative to dialogue, and somebody has to engage with somebody to find a way out and it stands true for J&K as well”, she said. “We shall have to ponder over how long we are going to allow this self-destruction to continue?” she said adding; “All of us, cutting across the political divide, shall have to reinforce our resolve to work through peaceful means and through public participation towards resolution of the problem and restoration of peace in the State so that our future generations can at least live in peaceful environment”. Now, there own people are saying this.

Given the unrest in Kashmir, in an interview to The Economic Times in August 2016, Baig had mentioned that Mehbooba would not “crack under pressure” but at the same time said that the onus was on the Modi government at the Centre to help Mehbooba deliver “on the agreed Agenda of Governance of the coalition government”.

Baig said at first when the two parties formed a government in the state the alliance did not face any opposition from anyone and urged both the parties to hold talks once the unrest in the valley is pacified
