PDP leaders move to begin peace talks with Sheriff

The May 21 national convention of the party ended in a stalemate and saw the removal of Ali Modu Sheriff as chairman of the party while a national caretaker committee was constituted.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the BoT meeting at the Musa Ya’Adua Center, Abuja on Monday.

The BoT did not mention the leadership crisis in the party, which has led to its factionalisation, but said it “has resolved to pass a vote of solid confidence in the National Caretaker Committee, and urged the committee to continue the good work of properly planning for the next national convention”.

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called an emergency meeting where the crisis rocking the party will be discussed.

However, none of the recommendations was accepted by the National Convention Committee led by the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Nyesom Wike. Jerry Gana, to continue with its reconciliation efforts.

The BoT, in a communiqué read by its national chairman, Sen.

Although the Convention Committee, headed by the governor of Rivers State allowed Ahmed Makarfi to remain and continue to hold forte for the PDP for the next one year, indications are rife that the PDP will begin to look beyond his Committee with plans to raise a new team to bring the two factions of the party on a round table for solution.

“What happened at the so-called convention in Port Harcourt has vindicated Sheriff’s position that the governors have not learned anything from the results of the 2015 election”.

“To ensure a credible, transparent, free and fair convention, a new convention planning committee should be constituted by the National Caretaker Committee and approved by NEC”.

However, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and presided over by Justice Okon Abang, halted the convention with its order on August 16.

George, who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday, said, “This week is going to be very crucial to the survival of our party. We are not going to Port Harcourt for another convention again”.
