Pebble’s new smartwatches focus on fitness

With no new devices from Pebble since the launch of the Time series, it’s possible that Pebble could be gearing up for an announcement of something to add to their product lineup, as they’re now teasing a reveal for something on May 24th, which is tomorrow. That means, though it’s still compatible with all the existing Pebble apps, you can read twice as much text on-screen at a time. “Health and communications is at the heart of how people use wearables today”, said Eric Migicovsky, CEO and co-founder of Pebble in a recent statement sent to MobileSyrup.

Pebble 2 will be available in five colors (black/green, all-white, black, green/white, and red/black) this September. Highlight the task you want to complete, press the middle button, and you’re done. It’s most useful feature is letting users load up watches with Spotify playlists with 4GB of storage and 3G connectivity, so you can leave the phone at home.

If you’ve been patiently waiting for a new E-ink wearable that can keep going long after an Apple Watch or Android Wear smartwatch has given up the ghost, there’s not too long left to go.

At the heart of the Pebble 2 is an ARM Cortex M4 processor running the Pebble OS on the E-paper display.

According to the company’s press release, the Pebble 2 will feature an anti-scratch screen coating. Even with a 50 percent larger display, the Time 2 still lasts for 10 days on a single charge, and both it and the Pebble 2 remain waterproof up to 30 meters.

And now for something completely different: Pebble Core is a little plastic square with a magnetic latch to attach to your clothing. Listen to Spotify and track distances and other running stats using built-in Global Positioning System, then sync that data with popular fitness apps, including Google Fit, MapMyRun, Runkeeper, Strava, and Under Armour Record. If you’ll recall, one of the benefits of the chronological Timeline interface it introduced previous year was that you could easily see what was coming up just by hitting one of the buttons on the side.

The most interesting of the three devices is the Pebble Core, a 3G connected wearable Pebble says is created to allow runners to track their fitness without carrying a smartphone.

“Think of it as Amazon’s Dash button, but it’s always on you”, Migicovsky told me as I tried to make sense of the Core. We’ll know more a day from now. Right now, that hub is our phone.

Pebble has just announced its third, and what the company is calling its best, Kickstarter campaign.

The Pebble Core is available on Kickstarter for $84 CAD and will start shipping in January.
