Pelicans add Stephenson to roster

It looks like Lance Stephenson is headed for his fourth team in three seasons.

The New Orleans Pelicans and free-agent guard Lance Stephenson have agreed to a deal, per Shams Charania of The Vertical.

Although talented, Stephenson has a reputation as a hard player to coach.

Stephenson is coming off a stretch with the Grizzlies where he averaged 14.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists over 26.6 minutes per game, but had little luck on the free agent market this offseason after Memphis declined his team option.

His one season with Charlotte was a disaster and he had the worst 3-point shooting season in National Basketball Association history (17.1 percent on 105 attempts).

There is no question that Stephenson was a major disappointment in Charlotte and L.A., but when he is on his game, he is a stat-sheet stuffer who makes a huge impact as a complementary player. He was sent to Los Angeles by the Hornets, with whom he spent one disappointing season after signing as a free agent and leaving the Pacers. There is undoubtedly plenty of talent on the roster with big man Anthony Davis leading the way, but remaining healthy will be key in 2016-17. When he played for the Indiana Pacers, Stephenson got into a fight with teammate Evan Turner during a practice before their opening-round playoff series in 2014 against the Atlanta Hawks.

Stephenson, who split time with the Clippers and Grizzlies past year, appeared destined to ply his trade elsewhere after receiving little free agent interest. Adding a guy like Stephenson brings an edge to the Pelicans and he can fill multiple roles for a team.
