As both players converged on a loose ball, Demichelis contrived to head it past Mangala and Firmino squared for Coutinho to steer a shot between the legs of Joe Hart.

City is in third place, two points back of league-leading Leicester, while Liverpool rises into ninth, level on points with No. 7 Everton and No. 8 Southampton.

Klopp didn’t start a single true striker, with Coutinho and Firmino playing the role for Liverpool.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admits his side were a complete disaster and unrecognisable to him in the 4-1 defeat at home to Liverpool.

Sergio Aguero gave City a few hope just before half-time, making it 3-1, but Skrtel made the game safe with just nine minutes of normal time remaining, smashing home a well-taken shot from a corner. I’ve never been one to turn down a good reason to celebrate and I’m not about to start.

“They were brilliant goals”.

Their persistence and positive outlook was rewarded when a lovely backheel on the edge of the box from Emre Can played in Coutinho, and he found Firmino with the goal at his mercy for a simple tap in just after the half hour mark.

“We tried to make another system and press high but it was exactly the same, it was not our night”.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs. Manchester City: Who shone as Jurgen Klopp’s side devastated the Citizens?

“We did not prepare well for their play, we did not create chances and we could have conceded three or four more”.

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for Sterling, who was taunted with chants of “Sterling, what’s the score?” and “one greedy b******” by the travelling section of Liverpool fans.

“It was far from ideal, but it was very, very good”, said Klopp.
