Pence gets ‘Hoosier homecoming’ after VP announcement

Donald Trump acknowledged that he and his running mate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence have different styles, and that he doesn’t necessarily expect Pence to use the name-calling tactics that Trump has used throughout the campaign.

In choosing Pence, Trump appeared to be looking past their numerous policy differences.

The Indiana governor has been a longtime advocate of trade deals such as NAFTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, both aggressively opposed by Trump. Trump has struggled to bridge the gap between himself, a self-described outsider, and the establishment and conservative wings of the party. He also endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, in the primary there.

Trump spent weeks weighing vice presidential contenders, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and only zeroed in on Pence in recent days.

Trump ticked through a list of statistics he said showed how Pence had pulled IN out of economic recessions: an unemployment rate that fell to less than 5 percent on his watch, an uptick IN the labor force and a decrease IN IN residents on unemployment insurance.

Pence had been in a tight re-election bid for governor and faced a Friday deadline to withdraw from that race in order to run for vice president instead.
