Donald Trump says he would declare war on ISIS and send “very few” US troops to the Middle East to combat the terrorist organization, speaking in his first interview alongside his new running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

Pence, however, has disagreed prominently with Trump on a number of issues; he has spoken out against the Republican presidential candidate’s controversial call for a ban on Muslims entering the United States and on trade deals.

Stahl mentioned Pence’s previous comments that “negative campaigning is wrong”, and asked him about what he thought of Trump’s campaign so far, with his name-calling at rivals Ted Cruz (“Lyin’ Ted”) and Hillary Clinton (“Crooked Hillary”).

Mike Pence has officially accepted Donald Trump’s offer to join him on the Republican presidential ticket.

Pence’s speech was effective because of the sharp contrasts he was able to draw between Trump and Hillary Clinton on a series of issues that matter to conservatives.

It comes after it was revealed the presumptive Republican nominee locked in Pence as his vice presidential candidate after being told he wasn’t picking “a new best friend”, reports say.

And on that score, Trump says he has already gotten important party approval for his choice of Pence.

Trump referred to the two men as “the law-and-order candidates”, adding that “we’re the law-and-order party”. Some have questioned whether Pence’s strong conservative stance on social issues might alienate demographic groups that lean Democrat. Pence delivered a statement at the time that praised both Trump and rival Ted Cruz, the US senator from Texas.

Pence spent 12 years in Congress before being elected governor and his demeanour is as calm as Trump’s is fiery. “I think he’s going to prove he’s the person who can lead our nation forward to keep us safe and keep our economy going”.

“But she’s not?” CBS interviewer Lesley Stahl pressed.

Trump was the first to answer.

“And one of the reasons is party unity, so many people have said, party unity”.

Ali Pardo, RNC’s Colorado Spokesowoman, shut down the notion that Trump and Pence have too many differences.

But Indiana Gov. Pence, Trump’s new running mate, also supported the war at the time. He also said the Pence family planned to return to the governor’s residence in Indianapolis for “pizza night”.

The selection of Pence was widely praised by conservatives within the Republican, many of whom continue to argue that Trump lacks conservative credentials making them tired about supporting him.
