First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele said Wednesday that his office had chose to proceed with the second-degree felony charge when new information came to light this July, after U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno unsealed Cosby’s deposition regarding the decade-old case this summer.
Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, a lawyer for several of the women accusing Cosby of sexually assaulting them, but whose cases occurred too long ago to press charges, told NBC her clients are “very happy” that Cosby has been charged. She said the prosecutor in the case was not seeking justice but “making good on a campaign promise”.
The case was reopened after a 2005 deposition was released earlier this year in which Cosby admitted he gave quaaludes to women.
Cosby will not return to court until January 14, but is now out on a $1 million bail.
He said possible charges are still pending with the district attorney’s office there, but the statute of limitations will run out in the spring. “She never thought he would hit on her, especially since Cosby is much older than her father”.
Mr Cosby has repeatedly denied the allegations against him, saying the sex with the women was consensual. This is the first criminal charges brought against the comedian out of the torrent of allegations that destroyed his good-guy image as America’s Dad.
She could hardly remain conscious, let alone consent to sex, she said.
Now, another of Cosby’s accusers is speaking about the arraignment.
“I have my doubts they get this to a jury anytime soon”, said Los Angeles defense attorney Mark Geragos, noting the thorny legal issues and Cosby’s advanced age (78) and infirmities, namely his badly deteriorating eyesight. Cosby also apologized and offered to pay for Constand’s therapy, prosecutors say. Constand has maintained a low profile since, and little is publicly known about her personal life, but it is clear that she has lived in Canada and worked as a massage therapist.
When asked if Cosby would take a plea deal, Pressley stated that she and her client would not consider “any sort of arrangement”. “I am not stopped”.
The AP generally does not identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they agree to have their names published, as Constand has done.

Joan Tarshis, of Woodstock, New York, who accused Cosby of drugging and attacking her when she was breaking into comedy writing in 1969, referred questions to Joseph Cammarata, a Washington-based attorney who is representing her in the MA defamation case that Tarshis and six other women filed against the comedian.
