People Aren’t Happy With Matt Damon’s Lead Role In ‘The Great Wall’
In such a recent development, Matt Damon’s upcoming big banner movie, The Great Wall serves as the merger between the Hollywood and the Asian Cinema, when the two worlds joined hands in promotion of the movie trailer on Thursday. “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that only a white man can save the world”, she wrote in a lengthy note posted to Twitter Friday. “Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon”, she tweeted. They look like Malala.
“Y’all sayin that im blaming ppl didnt read”. China’s stubborn censorship laws have always restricted many Hollywood movies to be released in Mainland China and therefore to counter this issue, Hollywood studios are now co-producing movies with the Chinese investors. It’s NOT abt blame, it’s abt awareness.
Actress Constance Wu, who stars on the ABC sitcom Fresh off the Boat, posted comments to Twitter saying that the traditional excuses used for casting white actors in roles that could be filled by minorities – the most common being that big-budget movies need to cast big-name white actors to make money – are no longer valid.
The Great Wall, directed by acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, is set in the Northern Song Dynasty and is about the mysteries surrounding the famous Great Wall.
Others replaced Damon on the posters of some of his signature movie roles with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan.
“It’s about pointing out the repeatedly implied racist notion that white people are superior to POC and that POC need salvation from out own color via white strength”, Wu wrote.
“For the millionth time it’s NOT abt blame. That way we dont get in exhausted fights abt good intentions”, she tweeted later.
