The alliance was an alternative for some of the urban populace that wanted to vote against the Trinamool Congress apart from the Left and Congress loyalists across the state.

The Chief Minister who played down questions on her alleged prime ministerial ambitions said, “I am a small person who has worked at various levels in Centre and here”. It got a respectable vote share in the assembly polls even though it was widely perceived as having sold out to Mamata Banerjee. In 2004, Mamata was the only one to win a Lok Sabha seat from her party.
“The people believed it is better to vote for Mamata Banerjee”, he said.
“It is convenient to blame the Congress for the decline in vote share”. With the election commission calling all the shots during the six-phase polling, no one can accuse the ruling party of any vote manipulation.

Even while the results were still being tallied, Mamata began addressing a press conference because the margin was so wide that defeat was an impossibility. According to preliminary results, The TMC, however, lost about 10-12 seats because of internal sabotage including Jadavpur where Manish Gupta – the giant killer of the 2011 election, when he defeated Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee who lost to Sujon Chakravarty of the CPM.
