U.S. police said an off-duty officer shot dead a suspect who had stabbed and wounded eight people in a shopping mall in Minnesota on Saturday night.
The first device, which exploded on West 23rd Street at about 8:30 p.m., appeared to have been caused by an improvised explosive device placed inside a toolbox in front of a building undergoing construction, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation.
An off-duty police officer from another jurisdiction shot and killed the attacker, Anderson said.
“It’s an bad day, honestly, we’ve got eight victims that were assaulted here in our mall”, Anderson told reporters at a midnight news conference. Seven had injuries that were not life-threatening; one was admitted.
“The individual we believe to be responsible for the victim’s stab wounds is now deceased inside the mall”, police said early Sunday.
Bellow said his brother, whose shift was about a half-hour from ending when the violence broke out, sent him a text that said there was a shooter in the mall.
The eight wounded were transported to St Cloud Hospital but none were believed to have life-threatening injuries, said Chris Nelson, a communications specialist for the medical facility.

Police revealed the man asked one victim if they were Muslim before stabbing them in the terrifying incident in Minnesota.
Police officials said they were still interviewing witnesses hours after the attack.
Sydney Weires told the St Clair Times she was shopping with friends at the mall when they heard a loud scream. “I thought someone tipped over a shelf”.
“All of a sudden these people started running – I just saw everybody running our way”. “They were screaming, ‘Someone’s stabbing people in the mall, ‘ and people were just really frantic and were running”.

“She called me on the phone and told me she was hiding under the counter with a customer”, Samuels said.
